Bangkok

Loud, hot and much easier to navigate than it looks — the Skytrain and river boats cover most of what you came for. Wat Arun and the Grand Palace early, markets and rooftop bars once the heat drops.

Temples before mid-morning

Chiang Mai

Slower, greener and a few degrees cooler. A walled old city full of temples, a strong cafe scene, and jungle, waterfalls and ethical elephant sanctuaries within a short drive.

Krabi & Phuket

The limestone-cliff postcard coast, with longtail boats out to Phi Phi and Railay. Phuket is the one with the airport and the nightlife; Krabi is the calmer base for the same scenery.

A different weather pattern to the Andaman side, which makes this the fallback when the west coast is wet. Samui for comfort, Koh Tao for diving, Koh Phangan for somewhere in between.
